Since credit card companies in India are notorious for poor customer service, I have not got a credit card till date. It is slightly inconvenient for online payments, but I do not have to waste my time arguing with call center employees. For online transactions I use the Netsafe card from HDFC bank.

I had generated a credit card for online payment  for Google Adwords on 21.09.2006 and the amount was promptly debited from my account. Google Adwords account also confirmed payment on 21.09.2006. When you enter the virtual credit card number for online payment, the status is changed to "in use", then " charged" and then "closed". Normally the card is charged within 2 days and the and leftover amount is credited back to the bank account within 4 days. This was when the leftover amount was small , less than Rs 100.

The final payment was for only 1/4th of  the card value. Even after 6 days,  the balance amount has not been credited back to my bank account. The balance amount is nearly Rs 2000 . When I checked the FAQ, they state for credit cards, the balance is credited back in 7 days, for debit cards in 35 days. The bank has obviously different rules for small amounts and large amounts, and the money remains with the bank for as long as possible.

Speaking to HDFC telephone support is not useful, since they usually do not know anything about the Netsafe card. If  you send an email, they take a week to respond. So I will have to just wait and hope they credit my account in a few days time. Already they 3% extra for foreign currency transactions and from December 1, 2006 , they will charge an additional 3%. Time to make online payments in Indian currency.
